General Launch Rpm
12/05/18 11:47 PM

Hi guys,
Just wondering what you guys find the best launch rpm ?
From Novice to experienced stock height ,
My engine guy set my woolich tune to 6k rpm but its way too high.

He also said its got a 2 step clutch release, what the heck is that?

I hear 3k rpm is good but is that good for an experienced rider or novice ?

Thanks lots Maddy

Screw all that crap. Here's what I do for practice... the art of the throw is linear, no bog. When I release the clutch: I'm at idle. I want the throw to come out of the gate without the feed making it fall on its face, dropping its nose, and had to pull the clutch in to up the rpm finding the linear.

Look at all that practice at lights and stop signs. You do not need to set a reference point at said rpm. The practice is more a feel for going zero/blank/no think, but sense the release, listen to the engine, feel the feed. And then it's back to feeling the stepping up of the release. You become more aggressive at the throttle, ignore the rpm increase, the feel is the feeding out of the lever.

Hub is exactly right. The pros pin the throttle and feed in clutch to the point that the front tire is barely hovering above the ground. It takes a lot of practice and nerve to perfect it though.

Maddy,

3k to 3.5k rpm range is where you want to launch the 14

On litter bikes you would launch in the 6k rpm range which
is probably why your guy set at 6k might not be that familiar with
launching the 14.

My goal is to always try to just float the front tire off
the ground a couple of inches through out first gear and
then I personally short shift to 2nd because 1st to 2nd
can be a real hand full on the 14.

Your 60' time is whats going to make your run. Takes
plenty of seat time.

Maddy,

Here's a girl power drag race video for you.

Erica Edwards. She's like 16 years old and drag races the 14.

Lots of vids on youtube if you search for her.

Thanks Guys :-)
Yes the fella that did the woolich tune to my bike is a zx9r drag racer so he probably assumed .....................

Im pretty good with throttle clutch , power to the back wheel thing, when I raced speedway, dirt track and long track I was in the top 3 fastest starters and even out gated Todd Wilshire who was known to be fastst in the world.

On dirt getting that bike to sing, on the back wheel to turn one was always a thrill 0-100kph or 60mph at 2.5 seconds on dirt .

Never done drag racing though, At my mature age now Im thinking of running the 14 at stock height down the 1/4.

With all the electronics these days to learn I can just pin it at 3k rpm and use the quick shifter.

I just cant decide 3k rpm or 3.5k rpm to learn

I hear ya Hub, back in my day we had dry clutch plates, a cable and a bloody lever, none of this hydrolic 2 step slipper stuff

I just cand decide 3k rpm or 3.5k rpm

Not that much a difference.

You can always easily set the "Built In" launch/staging light on the 14
to flash at 3k and 3.5K find back road practice your launch's at 3k and then at 3.5k

Then you'll get feel for which one and then have your guy set.

OH SHIT a dirt tracker! About the only skidding for me was a few days ago. We had a little rain here and I got caught in it late at night and no one around. Still taking risks so about 141k, the front end drifts, the back end is wiggling the liquid in my bladder kind of backing off and enough of that.

And Piken is right. The bike being the king of (production OEM) torque, the rpm is keyed to said cc size. 1000cc short strokers have the hp more upstairs so they need to be in the power band at said 6k; more or less.

Out the gate at 3k says I do not bog I have the torque.
Out the gate at 3.5k says no difference or a better leave.

My fear is pan dumping; I didn't catch it sooner. I rather communicate with the crankcase so I use the smellogram method. You're nose is going to tell how much abuse you are putting on the clutch plates. Right now you should smell a clean oil smell with a hint of exhaust gas blowby. You can tell the difference once the burn sets in. It won't have that oily base taint to it.
